5 Steps to Refinish Your Kitchen for a Stunning and Durable Finish

Refinishing your kitchen can give it a new lease on life and transform the look of your entire home. By following these five steps, you can achieve a professional-looking finish.

  1. Degreasing: Before starting any refinishing process, it's crucial to remove all grease, dirt, and grime from the kitchen cabinets. Use a degreaser (no tsp) specifically designed for kitchen surfaces and thoroughly clean each cabinet surface.

  2. Sanding: Sanding is essential to help the primer and topcoat adhere to the surface properly. Use coarse sandpaper (120 grit paper) to remove the old finish and any imperfections. Make sure to sand in the direction of the grain and take care not to sand too much and create dents on the surface.

  3. Priming with bonding primer (two coats): Priming is an important step to ensure a smooth and even finish. Use a bonding primer specifically designed for kitchen surfaces to create a strong bond between the old surface and the new topcoat. This will also help hide any blemishes or imperfections on the surface.

When priming kitchen cabinets, it is recommended to use a bonding primer specifically designed for kitchen surfaces. This type of primer creates a strong bond between the old surface and the new topcoat and helps to hide any blemishes or imperfections in the surface.

Some popular options include:
  • Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Plus 13 oz. Aerosol Primer

  • KILZ Adhesion High-Bonding Interior Primer

  • Sherwin-Williams ProBlock Oil-Based Primer

It's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions for application and drying time. Generally, it's recommended to apply the primer in thin even coats and allow enough time for it to dry completely before sanding and applying the topcoat.

  1. Sanding with fine paper before top coat and between coats: After the primer has dried completely, use fine sandpaper 320-grit paper to lightly sand the surface. This will help create a smooth surface for the topcoat to adhere to.

  2. Applying topcoat (two coats): Choose a topcoat that is specifically designed for kitchen surfaces, such as water-based polyurethane. Apply the topcoat in thin even coats, making sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for drying time between coats.

By following these five steps, you can refinish your kitchen cabinets with a smooth and durable finish. With a little patience and attention to detail, you can create a stunning kitchen that will last for years to come.
